Cholesterol supplements: what to know
Products marketed for cholesterol support are commercially popular, but marketing and clinical evidence are not the same thing.
Bottom line from current AHA guidance: dietary supplements are not recommended for cholesterol management, and some can interact with prescription medications.
How we evaluate a product
We look for a complete ingredient list, transparent amounts, plausible mechanisms, human evidence relevant to the actual ingredient and dose, safety information, medication interactions, and claims that do not outrun the evidence.
Questions worth asking
- Are ingredient amounts disclosed?
- Is the evidence about this exact formulation or only an ingredient in isolation?
- Could it interact with medications?
- Does the sales page imply treatment outcomes that are not established?
- Would using it delay evidence-based care?
